 Guide to Web Design

Take Advantage of Unique Web Characteristics, such as Layering, Linking, and Embedding

Move viewers around the site by providing menus with links to content pages. This brings the user to the content they want to view without having to scroll through text.

Note Zero to Three’s (http://www.zerotothree.org) menus on the right margin that provide links to the site's content:

Utilize “layering.”  Move visitors from simple or summarized content to more in-depth material through a series of links, each of which leads to more detailed information.

Incorporate web site linking to material within your site and to external sites that offer additional information related to your content.  Offering a link to related information within the text is more effective than providing a list of related links elsewhere on the site.

The University of Michigan Health System's Your Child site (http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/yourchild) embeds web site linking to material within the site and to relevant material on other web sites:

Document content in an unobtrusive way. A separate page of references can be reached from a “References” link at the end of an article.  Cite a reference within the text by linking to it from a highlighted word or phrase.
